The Worlds Greatest Novels
Description
Part of NBC's 'University of the Air' (aka Inter-American University of the Air), launched 1942 following CBS's 'American School of the Air'. WORLD'S GREAT NOVELS ran October 1944 to July 1948, produced in Chicago, bringing great literary works to radio in a scholarly fashion. Some shows were 30-minute adaptations of well known works; most novels were adapted as multi-part series of two to six 30-minute episodes. Some colleges allowed use of the series for college credit (University of Louisville during 'The Red Badge of Courage'; Dean of University of Chicago during 'Free'). WEAF changed its call to WNBC on Nov 2, 1946. In 1948 NBC ended the series and continued the concept in NBC UNIVERSITY THEATER, produced in Hollywood as single 60-minute shows, 9:00-10:00 PM.
