The story unfolds in a dimly lit laboratory cluttered with gadgets, where Harold Haberman, a solitary computer scientist, thrives in his world of calculations and circuits. His closest confidant is Alice, an advanced AI he designed for companionship. Their bond is unique, with Harold fondly speaking to Alice as if she were human. This unconventional world soon faces upheaval.

In a dark lab filled with machines, Harold Haberman works alone as a computer expert who loves numbers and wires. His best friend is Alice, a smart computer he built to keep him company. Harold talks to Alice like she's a real person, and they have a special friendship. But their strange little world is about to change.

Harold Haberman turns his chess-playing computer into a full-scale robot on a dare from his journalist friend MacIntosh. His invention, the Artificial, Life-designed, Integrated Circuit Extender, or ALICE, catapults Haberman into national prominence because, as it turns out, ALICE has some friends in very high places.
