Berenice
Ernest Montresor can't forget his dead wife's haunting smile and worries her evil spirit will ruin his chance at happiness with her kind sister, Constance. Scared out of his mind, he tells Constance she must never smile, not knowing that Berenice's ghost might have already picked her next target.
It was Berenice's smile that attracted Ernest Montresor. He married her but now has grown to hate her—her sensuous smile has become an ugly sneer. Besides, he has fallen in love with her younger sister. Montresor can't wait for Berenice, who is seriously ill, to die. On her deathbed she swears her smile will haunt him forever.
Haunted by the smile of his cruelly deceased wife, Ernest Montresor fears that her curse will destroy his hopes for a new life with her gentle sister, Constance. As paralyzing terror grips him, he forbids Constance to smile, unaware that Berenice's ghost may have already claimed her next victim.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
