In the quiet town of Hackettstown, the air buzzes with a tense calm. Sheriff Ed Blake, a stalwart figure of justice, navigates the town's secrets. Mary Courtney, a kind social worker, and her husband Arthur, an ex-convict, lead tranquil lives.

Sam Teller even permits ex-con Arthur Courtney to wed his daughter, Mary, after he allows Arthur to run his business. Within five years Courtney is able to expand Teller’s business into 22 thriving steak houses and, in recognition of this accomplishment, is elected president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. But suddenly he disappears, as does Mary. A piece of cloth torn from her dress is found in a remote area. She is presumed to be dead, and all evidence gathered by Sheriff Ed Blake points to Courtney as her murderer.
