Fireball

Description

In a tense and gripping drama of the atomic age, a dedicated industrialist brings home a secret weapon he has built, while his wife, isolated in a world she cannot understand, learns of its catastrophic potential. Despite his success, he is tormented by its implications and finally resolves to halt the project.

A committed businessman creates a dangerous atomic weapon and takes it to his house, but his wife feels alone and confused in a world that doesn't make sense to her. When she finds out how much damage the weapon could cause, her husband becomes troubled by what he has made, even though he succeeded, and decides he must stop the project.

The country’s biggest developer of new military weapons, Ben Cantwell, insists that his wife fire the blacksmith working on their estate, one Joe Vulcan. She refuses, because her intuition tells her that Vulcan, who is lame but very young in appearance despite his many years, might be the ancient God of Fire visiting Earth disguised as a mortal. Such a visit usually means trouble for the people he calls on, and she foresees trouble for her husband and his new horrible “fireball” weapon.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
