If a Body

A small-town sheriff doesn't believe a woman's story when she gets a big fortune after her husband is declared dead. She says her husband disappeared when he walked into a field, but the sheriff thinks she's lying about something.

The local sheriff becomes suspicious when a widow becomes the recipient of a huge inheritance after her husband is officially declared dead. He is unmoved by her claims that her husband vanished after walking into a field, and is certain that she is hiding something.

Maria McKibben begs Sheriff Joseph T. Bolan to find her husband, Clarence, who, she claims, walked into a field near his farm some 20 miles from Detroit and just vanished. The sheriff is sympathetic, though he cannot believe her story. But he does believe Clarence was murdered and soon gathers enough evidence to prove it. The town prosecutor, however, refuses to take the case to court unless the sheriff can produce Clarence’s body which, try as he might, he is unable to do.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
