Last Act
Barrister Peter Gaunt made his reputation with the flamboyant if unsuccessful defense of Joseph Barton, accused of strangling his wife. Yarmouth Police Commissioner McCloud also advanced his career with the case. But both men find their faith in the law shaken when, years later, another woman is found dead in the same strange circumstances as Mrs. Barton.
A lawyer goes back to Yarmouth, the town where he started working, and can't stop thinking about a murder that was never really solved. When someone else gets killed, he starts to think the courts got it wrong and they executed an innocent man for the first murder. The more he looks into it, the more people in town start wondering what really happened back then.
A barrister returns to Yarmouth, where he began his career, and is haunted by the memory of an unsolved murder. When a new murder occurs, he suspects that the justice system may have failed and that the man hanged for the first crime was innocent. As he digs deeper, the town begins to question the past.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
