Henry Smith suffers from recurring nightmares so frightening, that he refuses to discuss them with his immediate family. But his daughter-in-law, a former nurse, is able, by careful questioning, to extract from him the essence of his dreams which seem to take place in a city of canals, where he orders his soldiers to kill the “resisters.” Smith is so guilt ridden by the dreams, which he cannot explain, that he is sure he will soon die.

Henry Smith, a former Nazi captain, wrestles with guilt and fear as he tries to adapt to his new life as an American citizen. With the help of his daughter-in-law, Maria, he finally finds peace and forgiveness just before he dies from a cerebral hemorrhage. His death and her silence strengthen the family’s bond.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
