In the 1850’s, a small town in New Mexico becomes afflicted with a strange curse that affects only women and children. In a desperate bid to find a cure, the town’s mayor discovers an unspeakable horror from his past.

The year is 1851, and Don Edipo is serving as mayor of the town of Thebes, New Mexico, which is suffering from a dread pestilence. Edipo has summoned his deputy, Don Christiano, for advice. Christiano calls on a blind old Indian, Tiresio, a prophet who says that the murderer of Don Luis, a former mayor of Thebes, is in their midst and must be driven from Thebes before the pestilence will pass. Then he reveals that Edipo was the unwitting slayer of his father, who was Luis, and that he is the incestuous husband of his own mother. The suddenness of these revelations makes them incredible to all.

During the 1850s, a curse strikes a tiny New Mexico town, but it only hurts women and kids. The mayor tries everything to stop it, but then he finds out the terrible truth connects to something awful he did years ago.
