The local sheriff has been in love with a wealthy landowner for the longest time. When she confesses to the murder of her cousin over a dispute on the ownership of a certain property, ballistics reports on the weapon come back negative and he must find the true perpetrator of the crime in order to save her.

A small-town sheriff who has loved a rich property owner for years must find the real killer when she admits to murdering her cousin in a fight over land, but the gun evidence proves she didn't do it.

Alexandrea Edison, single and a person of considerable wealth, calls Sheriff Harry Scobie, whom she’s known since their high school days, to tell him she’s shot and killed a lawyer named Martin K. Beasley. As everyone in town knows, Beasley has been representing a firm intent on buying Miss Edison’s estate and turning it into a development of hamburger stands and cheap shops. Sheriff Scobie can’t believe Miss Edison is capable of murder, but nevertheless, in case he’s wrong, he orders her to claim she was forced to shoot in self-defense.
