The God That Failed

A U.S. senator crashes in a remote land while flying back from a diplomatic trip to a poor country. When he wakes up, he finds himself among a simple tribe that wants to worship him as their god. But first, he must do two things: wed one of their women and show them a miracle.

On the way home after visiting a third world country on a diplomatic mission, a U.S. senator is knocked unconscious during a plane crash. He wakes up in the midst of a primitive tribe willing to hail him as a god once he fulfills two requirements: to marry a local woman and perform a miracle.

Sen. Bob Blaisdell (Blaze, for short) is sent by his committee chairman to visit Alesser, a new nation in Asia. Blaze tries his best to suggest ways to modernize the land, but its people have no use for supermarkets or oil refineries. They do have one decrepit airplane, and Blaze is taken on a sightseeing trip which ends when the plane crashes in a remote jungle. The people who rescue him think he must be some kind of a god descended from the sky and expect him to heal the sick, stop the floods and end the wars. “But I can’t even do that in the United States Senate,” wails Blaze, whose only wish is to get back to Washington—fast.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
