The Hanging Sheriff
Sheriff Tom Bender never thought that he would be called upon to be chief executioner when a drifting salesman was accused, convicted and sentenced to hang for murder. In truth the drifter accidentally killed someone, but the town needs a hanging and needs a hangman. Tom must find a way of ridding himself of the job and his nagging wife.
A gentle sheriff struggles to carry out an execution. When his interfering wife pushes him to act, he must help the condemned man escape.
A softhearted sheriff has difficulty imposing the death sentence. When his meddlesome wife forces his hand, he is compelled to aid in the prisoner's flight.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
