The Other Self

A factory owner hires a psychiatrist, Dr. Wilma Heckman, to find out why Oliver Townsend is the only contented worker in a boring assembly line job. It is because, she soon discovers, he is living in two worlds—one his job, the other a constant reconstruction in his mind and with toy soldiers of the Battle of Shiloh. However, as the anniversary date (April 6-7) of the battle approaches, Oliver becomes so certain he will be killed that he starts taking days off from his job for the first time in eight years.

A psychologist becomes interested in a factory worker who has an outstanding work record. Through multiple meetings with him, she learns that his obsession with the Civil War battle of Shiloh helps him stay focused while doing boring jobs.

A factory with an exemplary track record catches the attention of a psychologist. After several encounters with the man, she discovers that his fixation with the battle of Shiloh during the Civil War is what allows him to focus on the most tedious of tasks.
