A woman with secrets comes to London to care for injured people during wartime bombing. A young woman with a mysterious past arrives in London to nurse the wounded during the Blitz. Her calm demeanor and dedication to her work impress her colleagues, but her unfamiliarity with basic nursing tasks and aloofness stir suspicion. When Scotland Yard shows her identity is a fake, her struggle to find peace among chaos intensifies.

Ann Jesperson, who grew up unhappily in a Madison, Wisconsin, orphanage, goes to London during the World War II blitzkrieg to help nurse the wounded back to health. She works long hours, dispassionately, even refusing to go into a shelter during air raids. Nevertheless, she is ultimately attracted to a seriously wounded American aviator who, despite Ann’s round-the-clock attention, dies just moments before she receives the mysterious call that saves her life.
