The only lead the police have for two murders is that both victims were shot by the same revolver. No one in the neighborhood is of much help, and the publisher is certain he won’t be caught. But he doesn’t know what the policeman told a diner waitress before he was killed or that his wife suspects him—not only of having cheated on her but also, for reasons she can’t figure out, of having fired the .38 he always carries at both the women and the cop.
