Red Harrison Kendall, an old-time confidence man usually one step ahead of the law, gets arrested in a small North Carolina town. He talks his way out of a jail sentence and starts to head west when he is befriended by a little old lady on her way to the bank to pay off her $1,000 mortgage in cash. Thinking Red a reverend, she asks him to hold her pocketbook for a moment—a mistake both she and he soon regret.
