A writer is pressed by his publisher to alter the ending of his book in order to take fuller advantage of the character of his heroine. The writer hesitates with the premonition that the character crafted by him might actually be alive

A publisher pushes a writer to change how his book ends so they can better use his female hero character. The writer holds back because he has a strange feeling that the character he created might really be living and breathing.

Writer Steven Lake is strangely insistent on ending his novel with the death of its central character, Clarissa, even though his one chance of having it published turns on rewriting the ending to let her live.
