Suzanne Leaves Without the Baby

Pat's wife Suzanne has run away from her family and the town, saying she does not want to be found. The story opens in Johnny Keats's office, where Penny is telling him about Suzanne's disappearance. Yesterday afternoon, Penny's mother Mrs. Gibbs found a note left in the baby's crib. In the note, Suzanne says she cannot take anymore, that she hates everyone including her own baby, and that she is leaving far away where no one can find her. Penny has talked to Professor Rogers about what happened. Penny and Johnny have a romantic history together, and Johnny tells her he still loves her. However, Penny says they cannot go back to the past and should not try, since it would only cause more problems. She tells Johnny that he is married to Alice and should love her instead. Johnny agrees to stop talking about his feelings. Then Stuart Rogers comes in with important news about Suzanne. He found out that she took a bus to New York the day before. Penny goes to find her brother Freddy to tell him the news. She finds him packing a suitcase because he is moving to Glen Cove. The announcer then asks the audience whether Freddy has really left Penny's life for good, or if his connection to the rich woman Madeleine Dodge will cause problems for Penny.
