Lord of the Rings
Description
Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' fantasy epic set in Middle Earth. The BBC first did a 12-part condensed radio adaptation in 1956. In 1981 the BBC produced a serial of twenty-six 30-minute episodes (not condensed, though it leaves out some events), fairly faithful to the book with excellent characterizations and music. Adapted for radio by Brian Sibley and Michael Bakewell; directed by Jane Morgan and Penny Leicester; voiced by British actors including Ian Holm as Frodo, Michael Hordon as Gandalf and Peter Woodthorpe as Gollum. In 1982 the BBC re-aired it as thirteen one-hour episodes. Available from the BBC on cassette and CD.
The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by the English author and scholar J. R. R. Tolkien. Set in Middle-earth, the story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 children's book The Hobbit but eventually developed into a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling books ever written, with over 150 million copies sold.
