# General Washington's Army is Stopped by Smallpox General Washington and his soldiers faced a serious problem that had nothing to do with enemy soldiers. A disease called smallpox spread through the army and made many men too sick to fight. This sickness was so bad that it stopped Washington's army from doing what they needed to do. The soldiers got very ill, and the army couldn't move forward with their plans because so many men were unable to work or battle.
