Portia Reveals Pregnancy

Portia is expecting a baby, and Walter is nowhere to be found. To make matters worse, Walter is losing his sight in Ankara, Turkey. Missing mail might keep them separated forever. Portia talks about her pregnancy with three of her friends. Miss Daisy notices she's been crying and asks why. Portia says she's just nervous. Cathy suggests Portia write to Walter and tell him the news. The friends all agree that pregnant women need to take it easy and get plenty of rest. After they leave, Cathy thinks Walter will come home once he finds out. But Miss Daisy disagrees, saying Walter left Parkersburg because he didn't want to live there anymore. It turns out Portia sent Walter a letter three weeks ago through Cliff, but she hasn't heard back. The friends wonder if Walter is still dealing with problems from the war. The scene shifts to Walter in Ankara, sitting in a study with his friend Eric Watson. Walter's eyes are shut while Eric reads from a typed paper. Eric tells him it's his best work yet. Then we find out Walter has gone blind. Eric says Dr. Steinhoff, an eye doctor, is traveling to Ankara from Tel Aviv right now. He should arrive tomorrow or the next day to examine Walter. Portia Faces Life is an American soap opera first broadcast as a radio series from 1940 to 1953, and then on television for a single season in the mid-1950s. It began in syndication on April 1, 1940, and was broadcast on some stations that carried NBC programs, although it does not seem to have been an official part of that network's programming. The original title was Portia Blake Faces Life.
