A doctor named Jeffers is shot while in the park. Holmes and Inspector Le Strade start to argue about the case. Holmes warns that he will make Le Strade look foolish if things don't go his way. The shooter fired twice, but only one of the bullets actually hit Jeffers. Holmes uses the new science of ballistics to figure out who did it.
