War and Peace
WAR AND PEACE is Leo Tolstoy's epic novel, originally published as "Voyna i mir" in 1865-1869. The first known attempt at radio adaptation was done in 1945: in September of that year, a 6-part adaptation aired in NBC's WORLD'S GREAT NOVELS series, each episode 30 minutes long, and is not believed to have survived. In 1997, the BBC tackled the novel in 10 one-hour episodes, presented unabridged on Radio 4's CLASSIC SERIALS program, airing weekly at 2:30 PM. The BBC released the series on tape in the UK (ISBN 0563382732); in the US it is marketed through Bantam Doubleday Audiobooks (ISBN 0553479431). Related program "Making Love, War And Peace" depicts Tolstoy's life during the time he was writing "War And Peace"; it aired on BBC Radio 4 on 10 January 1998 and, although not part of the serial, is included in the log.
War and Peace is an epic novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, the work comprises both a fictional narrative and chapters in which Tolstoy discusses history and philosophy. An early version was published serially beginning in 1865, after which the entire book was rewritten and published in 1869. The novel has claims to be the greatest novel written. It is regarded, with Anna Karenina, as Tolstoy's finest literary achievement, and it remains an internationally praised classic of world literature.
