Description
Eileen Holmes is starting her job as a student nurse at Municipal Hospital in Chicago. Today is her first meeting with Helen Bradley, who runs the nursing department. Before they meet, Dr. Burton walks in on Helen arguing with a man. He brings Eileen in to introduce her, saying that Eileen comes from his hometown and has great recommendations. Once they're alone, Helen tells Eileen that nursing is hard work with lots of responsibility, but it feels good to help people. Eileen shares that she's been a hospital patient before and saw how caring and skilled nurses can be. Helen mentions that Eileen knew Karen Abbott, a nurse who became famous during an outbreak. Eileen explains that Karen was her nurse right before Karen got sick herself, and that Karen inspired her to become a nurse. Eileen also tells Helen that her father was a doctor and she went on house calls with him as a kid. Helen says they got off to a bad start because she's been stressed lately. Eileen then says that when her parents died, Dr. Robert Purdy raised her, and she thinks of him as her father now. She calls Western Union and sends Dr. Purdy a telegram saying "All my love, Eileen." After Eileen leaves, Helen goes to see Dr. Burton and asks where he found her. He says he didn't find her—she just showed up. Helen agrees that's how
