A Cup of Bitter Chocolate

Description

A man's greed drives him to poison his wealthy, wheelchair-bound mother. His manipulative partner insists on staging the murder as a suicide, and as the plot thickens, the loyal butler switches the cups and foils the scheme. The son dies in the struggle, while the mother, freed from her chair, attends his funeral.

A greedy son wants to kill his rich mother who uses a wheelchair by giving her poison. His sneaky girlfriend makes him pretend it looks like the mother killed herself. But the faithful butler who works for the family changes the poison cups around and ruins their plan. The son ends up dead in the fight, and his mother can walk again and goes to his burial service.

Ted Poindexter, heir to his mother’s vast fortune but desperate for money right now, is urged by his greedy girlfriend to poison his mother. But Miles, the family butler, prevents Ted from slipping pills into her nightly hot chocolate, warning that as long as he’s around Ted won’t get away with murder. At his girlfriend’s prodding, Ted makes plans to do away with his mother and Miles. Nearly the victim of an auto accident involving Ted’s car, Miles decides he must do something about Ted before Ted can do something about him.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
