A Ton of Gold
Description
A team of archaeologists searching for gold in the New Mexico desert turns against each other when greed takes over. Ruth tries to kill her husband Edwin with poison because she wants the treasure, but Edwin lives through it and shoots Ruth back. During their fight, the cave falls down and traps the gold inside, killing everyone except one person who makes it out alive.
Dr. Edwin Doughty, his wife Ruth, and his assistant Walter Stafford arrive in western New Mexico to uncover a treasure in gold dust, hidden centuries before the Yawe Indians. Their Indian guide agrees to lead them to the riches on one condition: that first they hear about the curse of the Zamora gold.
In the New Mexico desert, the quest for gold drives a group of archaeologists into a web of suspicion and betrayal. Greed and ambition lead Ruth to poison her husband Edwin, but he survives and shoots her; in the ensuing struggle, the cave collapses, entombing the gold and all but one of the party.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
