Age Cannot Wither
Description
A man and his young-looking wife share an endless love, but she's actually lived for centuries. When Eleanor vanishes during a boat trip, the townspeople start to doubt John. While John remembers their many years together, Eleanor tells him she wants to die so he won't have to carry the weight of her never-ending life anymore.
When John and Eleanor Burnham go sailing and only John returns, the sheriff's suspicions are aroused. Unable to say where Eleanor is, John is jailed for murder and tells a skeptical sheriff that he didn't murder her, because she can't die. Eleanor, says John, was born 400 years ago, the daughter of an alchemist who gave her the Elixir of Life that made her 19 years old forever. The fact that Eleanor still looks 19 after 45 years of marriage to John is convincing—until her body is found, with evidence that she planned to run away with another man.
This fantasy drama about the eternal love of a man and his youthful wife, who is really hundreds of years old. The townsfolk grow suspicious of John when Eleanor disappears after a sailing trip. As John recalls his long life with Eleanor, she confides her wish to die and release him from the burden of her immortality.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
