Death and the Dreamer

Description

Garibaldi's life in America as a candle-maker is interrupted by the news of his mother's death, which stirs him to seek work on the docks and return to Italy to continue the fight for his country's freedom. Antonio Meucci, the inventor of the telephone, and his wife Leonora help Garibaldi regain his lost determination.

With his army defeated, Garibaldi is working in a Staten Island candle factory, convinced his dream of leading his country will be realized by someone else. His employer, Antonio Meucci, notices Garibaldi’s strange trips to the docks every morning, seeking a berth on a sailing ship. But when he refuses to admit to these visits, the Meucci family fears the great general is losing his mind.

News of his mother's death breaks Garibaldi's quiet life making candles in America, driving him to find dock work so he can sail back to Italy and keep fighting for his homeland's independence. Telephone inventor Antonio Meucci and his wife Leonora help Garibaldi find his fighting spirit again.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
