It’s Hard to Be Rich

Description

A struggling writer moves into a crumbling apartment building looking for peace and quiet, but he can't get away from the building's evil history or stop thinking about his murdered wife. The place is full of hidden secrets and a spooky song that pulls him—and viewers—into a story about losing his mind and people dying.

When writer Stephen Brooks rents a room in a dingy, dilapidated building, the meddlesome superintendent, Hilda, can’t understand why such an obviously wealthy man would tolerate such a seedy place. Her suspicions are further aroused by his complaints that he’s being bothered by the piano playing of Jenny Cartwright, who, Hilda knows, had lived there before she was murdered almost a century ago. Hilda takes her worries to the police, who look up Brooks’ file and discover that he was the prime suspect in the recent murder of his wife, who was also named Jenny.

In a rundown apartment building, a troubled writer seeks solitude but finds it impossible to escape the echoes of its dark past and the haunting memory of his wife’s murder. The air is thick with unspoken secrets and a ghostly melody that leads him—and the audience—through a tale of madness and death.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
