Journey to Somewhere

Description

The train's rhythmic clatter becomes a backdrop for the inner storms of its passengers: a grieving widower, a divorced woman wrestling with her newfound freedom, and a frail elderly lady dreading a nursing home. A nurse's sudden illness halts the train, forcing the passengers to examine their lives and their futures.

The steady sound of the train on the tracks sets the scene for three troubled travelers: a man mourning his dead wife, a woman struggling with life after divorce, and a weak old lady who fears moving to a care facility. When a nurse gets sick and the train must stop, the passengers are forced to take a hard look at their lives and what comes next.

Five persons—a lady who is being railroaded into an old folks home against her will; a woman who feels her life is already over; a man who has turned from the living to the dead; a self-confessed punk who cares about nothing but himself; and a young girl whose secret lies behind two dark and frightened eyes—are all headed for Skeffington Junction, until the train carrying them starts crossing a bridge that has been weakened by the winter’s worst storm.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
