Lamps of the Devil

Description

After the Civil War, Noah Arkwright comes back to his small Massachusetts town to find everything has changed - his fiancée married someone else, whaling ships replaced by oil business, and nothing feels like home anymore. This touching story follows his fight to accept what he's lost and figure out what comes next.

The steady pulse of whaling is replaced by petroleum in a small Massachusetts town as Noah Arkwright, returned from the Civil War, discovers his fiancée is married to another man and that he is now adrift in an unrecognizable home. His struggle to come to terms with the past and the future forms the basis of this moving drama.

Civil War hero Noah Artwright’s homecoming turns sour when his fiancée tells him she is already married. To add to his misery, Artwright, former skipper of a whaling ship, is unable to find a job because the discovery of petroleum has made the use of whale oil almost extinct. Artwright finally does get work, as captain of a petroleum-carrying vessel, but his crew, mostly ex-whale hunters and mutinies, demand that he throw overboard his valuable cargo of crude oil.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
