Nefertiti Part V: The Curse of the Scarab

Description

Queen Nefertiti loses her daughter and wants to give her a proper burial in the old ways. She dresses like a boy to sneak away from her husband Akhenaten's city in the desert. Her plan is to take her child's coffin to Thebes in secret. But when she loses her jewelry and the boat crew starts asking questions, her disguise might be discovered - and that could get her killed.

Desperate to bury her daughter according to tradition, grieving Queen Nefertiti, disguised as a boy, escapes from her husband Akhenaten's desert capital to smuggle the child's coffin to Thebes, but lost jewelry and suspicious sailors threaten the deception that could cost her life.

Akhenaton, with his obstinate belief in one god, has become a religious fanatic. Because he has denied their daughter, Mekataton, a proper Egyptian funeral, Nefertiti stows away on a Nile River barge headed for Thebes, carrying with her Mekataton’s embalmed body. But, just as the funeral ceremony is about to begin, Akhenaton appears. He stops the proceedings, takes away his daughter’s coffin and decrees that Nefertiti will from now on be treated as a common slave. Later, when he proclaims he has become Aton, his one god, and Nefertiti calls him a fool, he attacks her with a palette knife. But he accidentally falls on it and kills himself, leaving Nefertiti and the young Tutankhamen to rule Egypt.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed.
