The Outside Girl

Description

Living off his wealthy mother, a good for nothing alcoholic becomes unusually attached to his father's portrait which he painted years ago. Upon waking from an alcohol induced stupor, he awakens to find the portrait gone, together with the new cleaning lady.

Geraldine, the Dryers’ household maid, calls with the news that because of her mother’s illness she will have to send someone to take her place. Cassandra, who calls herself an “outside girl,” arrives and immediately opines that the subject for a portrait in the Dryer library looks “dead.” While working, she talks to it sympathetically and later it seemingly, talks back to Charles Dryer, who painted it. It’s a portrait of his late father, whom he disliked, and it says to Charles: “Help, please help me.”

A lazy drunk who lives off his rich mother's money becomes obsessed with a painting he made of his dad years earlier. After he passes out from drinking too much, he wakes up to discover both the portrait and the new housekeeper have disappeared.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
