The Smile of Death

Description

In order to get his rightful inheritance from his overbearing father, the illegitimate son of a baron is aided by the spirit of his deceased mother.

According to the way the townsfolk talk, it was just two days after Sir Bale Mardykes drowned his wife Libby, years ago so he could marry a rich baroness, that the luminous form of a female began to rise halfway out of the lake on dark, misty days. Some of the superstitious townspeople believe it is Libby, rising from the spot where she was drowned, and they foresee nothing but trouble when her son, Philip, now grown, returns to determine if the shape is really his mother and to confront Sir Bale, his father.

A baron's bastard son gets help from his dead mother's ghost to claim the money and land his controlling father owes him.

The episode explores a supernatural mystery involving a luminous female form that rises from a lake on misty nights. Local residents suspect it's the ghost of Libby, who was drowned years ago by Sir Bale Mardykes so he could marry a wealthy baroness. When Philip, now an adult, returns to investigate whether the apparition is truly his mother and to confront his father, the townspeople grow anxious about impending calamities.
