The Smoking Pistol

Description

When a cop's son is murdered and a suspect is found holding a smoking gun, he figures it's an open and shut case. But when the suspect's mother appeals to him to investigate further, doubts arise in his mind.

Jerry Reinfield, a young undercover cop, is murdered while trying to bust a drug ring, and George Mason is apprehended near the scene with the murder weapon, drugs and Jerry’s wallet. Even to Jerry’s father, Police Lt. Harry Reinfield, it seems like an open and shut case, since Mason was caught holding “the smoking pistol.” But Mrs. Mason claims her son didn’t do it and haunts the lieutenant until he opens an investigation of his son’s horrible death.

A police officer thinks he's solved his son's murder when they catch someone with the weapon. But when the accused person's mother begs him to dig deeper, he starts to question what really happened.

CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
