A British major hires the flashy Inspector Blunt to find a stolen holy white elephant in New York's crowded criminal world, but Blunt's dramatic style quickly turns the investigation into a confusing mess of mixed-up evidence and funny errors.
Inspector Blunt is informed by British Major Smathers that the sacred white elephant he was entrusted to deliver to Queen Victoria has been stolen. Certain badman Barge Crisswell is the thief, Blunt orders 100 men to storm his home, only to discover Crisswell has been dead for 15 years—hanged as a result of Blunt's own brilliant detective work.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
