Minnie Maxwell, unbeatable on the tennis court, loses a big match to a woman she had easily beaten before because her strongest stroke, her backhand, seems to have failed her. Interviewed afterward by sports reporter Bob Clone, Minnie startles him with the admission that she has sold her backhand to the devil. But she doesn’t tell Clone what form this devil has taken or why she agreed to make a deal with such a demon.
CBS Radio Mystery Theater is a radio drama series created by Himan Brown that was broadcast on CBS Radio Network affiliates from 1974 to 1982, and later in the early 2000s was repeated by the NPR satellite feed. In New York City it was not aired by the then all-news WCBS but by its originating station, WOR, which produced and announced it as simply Radio Mystery Theater.
