Lum and Abner

At the Jot 'em Down Store, Abner has been made "Dr. Peabody," head chemist of the Edwards and Peabody Chemical Company, to sell L's potato-bug spray while Grandpappy Spears looks on skeptically. With the community picnic pulling everyone away and Elizabeth stuck working her crops, Lum and Abner realize the same formula that kills potato bugs may wipe out boll weevils threatening Pine Ridge cotton. They decide to take what formula remains and test it on the weevils, hoping the Hemstead invention can save the cotton crop after all.

Grandpappy Spears helps Lum and Abner at the Jot 'em Down Store mix gallons of the Hemstead formula meant to save Pine Ridge from boll weevils while orders pour in from farmers such as Earl. Constable Ben Withers has been pressed into service as a delivery boy, and the men debate how to protect the formula even as they dream of getting rich. A call comes from Thompson, head of the Pike County Cotton Growers Association, offering to buy six thousand gallons if the spray works as claimed, leaving Lum and Abner convinced that fame and fortune are finally coming to the Edwards and Peabody Chemical Company.

Lum figures out what's going on, and it becomes clear that the fake person is actually Squire Skimp.

The trail leads into a part of the city near the waterfront where the air is heavy with roasting coffee, and to a man seated at a round table beside a brass cuspidor standing some thirty inches off the floor.

The question is how the Squire knew the chemical company was sending a man out, and the answer is that he was in the store when the letter came. He sent Brewster over ahead of them and got the only other coffee farm going.
