When writer Stephen Brooks rents a room in a dingy, dilapidated building, the meddlesome superintendent, Hilda, can’t understand why such an obviously wealthy man would tolerate such a seedy place. Her suspicions are further aroused by his complaints that he’s being bothered by the piano playing of Jenny Cartwright, who, Hilda knows, had lived there before she was murdered almost a century ago. Hilda takes her worries to the police, who look up Brooks’ file and discover that he was the prime suspect in the recent murder of his wife, who was also named Jenny.
