Malvern Grange, a gloomy old house, is the scene of Ellen Muir's efforts to adjust to her stern aunt, Hester Milgram, and to the cook, Meg O'Meara, and the handyman, Joe Wellman. Ellen is drawn into the shadowy life of Madam Lytton, who is haunted by the disappearance of a small boy. Ellen's search for the truth finds the boy's remains, and Madam Lytton's spirit is released from its burden of guilt.
