Kayerts and Carlier are assigned by the Great Trading Company to an isolated post in the African jungle to collect ivory tusks. They are assisted by the natives, led by Makola. When they are initially unsuccessful, Makola arranges to sell the other natives who work at the post to hostile warriors from Loanda—payment to be made in ivory. Later, their assignment complete, but without employees to care for them, Kayerts and Carlier become feverish and quarrelsome, threatening to kill each other, and Makola does nothing to stop them. Her brother, Leslie Arliss, went from screenwriter to director, directing such films as The Night Has Eyes (1942), A Man About the House (1947), and Miss Tulip Stays the Night (1955).
