Minutes after Mrs. Margaret Chandler meets her long-lost granddaughter Charity in a department store, the building is destroyed by a boiler explosion. Mrs. Chandler's back is broken and she is also blinded. Charity suffers amnesia. The hospital staff is uncertain whether Charity is really Charity and must decide whether she should be allowed to stay with the older woman as she dies.
